Description
Superb and quite unknown Fisher of Moscow cabinet photograph of the legendary Italian, later Russian pedagogue and opera tenor.Umberto Masetti (1869-1919), a lyric tenor was born in Bologna and studied at the local conservatory with composer Giuseppe Martucci. Upin graduation, he made a career for five years as a concert and oratorio singer and conductor. He then joined the faculty of the Bologna Conservatorio where he taught among others, tenor Fernando Carpi and baritone Riccardo Stracciari. However, he also taught Jacob Rubinstein the son of the pianist and composer Anton Rubinstein. Rubinstein's father passed away in 1894, however, the family still had great influence at the Conservatory and Masetti was hired in 1899 to be the Director of the vocal department there. He became the most influential vocal pedagogue of his time for female singers, teaching among others: Nina Koshetz, Maria Kurenko, Nadehzda Obukhova and Anatolia Neshdanova.
