Description

Soviet Red Army Military Issue Field Compass, un-dated but 1930s -1940s vintage.
This GUARANTEED ORIGINAL Soviet piece from WW2 or pre-war era, not a more recent version.
Measures 2" in diameter. Standard type with a Bakelite and brass case. Brass sight screwed to the stainless steel bezel. The inside bottom of the dial shows the factory name (Fizpribor Factory, Moscow, R.S.F.S.R.") in raised letters. The leather wrist strap is old but newer than the compass.
Appears to be in working condition, although the large arrow head on the floating magnetic needle consistently seems to point due south instead of north. As a result, we cannot state that this compass is still reliable. Original glass, scratched from field use but dial inside is still legible. The underlying brass shows through the chrome plating in places. The degree dial shows some staining but is still legible. Both of the two sights are present although each is  missing one of its two screws. Wrist strap is still flexible but has swollen slightly where it fits through the loops on
the casing, making us reluctant to try to remove it to see if there is a date stamped into the Bakelite underneath it (we have tried to look and there does not seem to be a date on the back).
A delicate instrument that has survived the past seven decades. Excellent for inclusion in a display of Red Army field gear.
