    Description

    We offer an incredibly scarce Hoffert imperial cabinet photograph of the great German-Jewish baritone as Tigerllinus, the Prefect of the Praetorian Guard in Anton Rubinstein's opera, Nero.  The photograph measures 5.25" x 8.5".
    Breitenfeld (1869-1942) spent the majority of his career at Frankfurt AM.  He made his opera debut in Cologne in 1897 as Di Luna in Il Trovatore.  He moved on to Frankfurt in 1902, also sung in the Amsterdam Premier of Parsifal as Kurvenaal in 1905 when it was "forbidden" to sing outside of Bayreuth.  He sung a wide range of both German roles and Italian traditional roles including Wagner leads.  Also sung at the Vienna Hofoper, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, and Zurich.  He created the lead baritone roles in Walterhausens' "Obest Chabert", Zemlinsky's "Das Spielwerk und die Prinzessin" and Stephat's "Die ersten Menschen".   He was the Rigoletto for the 25th Jubilee performance of the local Verdi Festival in 1927.  Breitenfeld who was Jewish was put on a transport for Theresin, where he was murdered in 1942.  Legendary and scarce records.
