Description
Original Gurney of New York carte de visite photograph of the American coloratura soprano.Van Zandt (1842-19??) made her stage debut as Gilda in Rigoletto at the Academy of Music in New York City. She went to England in 1865 and first sung with the Carl Rosa Opera Company, moving to Covent Garden from 1868-1871. In 1867 she went to Milan and made guest appearances at La Scala under the name Vazzini. She returned to New York in 1871 and sung a final season at the Academy of Music before retiring from the opera stage and sung concerts and also in chuch. She also set herself up as a vocal teacher. Her daughter was Marie van Zandt, also a coloratura soprano who created the title role of Lakme for Delibes at the Opera Comique.
