Description
Original matte, double-weight film still photograph of the legendary bass as Don Quixote in the 1933 G. W. Pabst British film of the same name. The photograph is date stamped July 15, 1934 prior to the Christmas release in America the same year. The photograph has a 6.5" diameter.Towards the end of his life, Chaliapin agreed to perform in the Pabst film with music by Jacques Ibert and songs written especially for Chaliapin. Pabst independently approached, Delannoy, Falla, Ibert, Milhaud and Ravel to write music for the film. Ibert's music was chosen prompting Ravel to sue to producers. Chaliapin had created the role of "Don Quichotte" in Massenet's opera in 1910 and was a natural choice to perform the role. The film which is available in many formats is quite wonderful with an English and French version. Chaliapin, not used to acting for film uses his large stage gestures throughout though he is touching and effective in the role.
The photograph is missing some emulsion at the left side of his forehead, however, the image is still quite haunting. We have priced accordingly. We include the entire English language version of the film below.
