I retired (5) years ago after spending the majority of my career working in testing and calibration labs and relocated to the northeast. I wrote calibration procedures and was the calibration procedure release focal for the largest aerospace manufacture in the U.S.A. My main area of expertise was in dimensional metrology. I also participated in writing many ASME B89 standards including B89.3.7 “Granite Surface Plates” which replaced Federal Specification GGG-P-463c.
I acquired this item used a number of years ago with the intent of possibly opening my own calibration laboratory someday. I have never previously used it. It has been kept in storage since then.
I performed a “functional test” only of the gage head and amplifier utilizing the following:
1.)
Federal TE-10 leveling table
2.)
Grind Mate® 5” Sine Plate
3.)
Starrett/Webber rectangular gage block set
4.)
Sheffield Pink Granite (Salisbury, N.C.) Surface Plate
a.) Lifting each end of the gage head, I was able to deflect the meter moment from left to right of full scale. (See photos).
b.) I was able to perform a calibration and adjustment of the “gain” potentiometer on the amplifier on the +/-.400 arc second range per the instruction manual.
NOTE: Normally the scale accuracies on electronic gaging amplifiers are closely correlated so that when you change from one range to another the accuracy will remain within acceptable limits. I decided however to be sure and performed additional checks on the +/- 100 arc second and +/- 20 arc second scales using the test equipment noted above.
NOTE: I do not have N.I.S.T. traceable standards to provide a calibration/certification of the Federal 231P-1 amplifier and EGH-8 gage head.
Due to its age, and the nature of vintage test equipment it is being sold “AS-IS”. All SALES ARE FINAL. NO RETURNS.
This listing is for the following:
(1) Federal 231P-1 gaging amplifier and
(1)
Federal EGH-8 gage head
(1) Carrying case
NOTE: I cleaned and lubricated the potentiometers and rotary switches, as applicable.
NOTE: The 5.4V mercury cell battery pack which was normally furnished when this item was originally made has been replaced with Lithium batteries.
NOTE:
In 1996, the United States Congress passed the “
Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act
”
that prohibited further sale of mercury-containing batteries unless manufacturers provided a reclamation facility, effectively banning their sale.
NOTE
: Also included with this sale is a copy of Federal’s “Profiling With The Electronic Level”. It provides worked examples of how to collect the data and calculate the overall flatness of a surface plate or straightness by profiling a line.
The features noted below are taken from Federal Products
sales literature
and may not reflect the actual performance and options of the item for sale and is provided as an overview and for informational purposes only. I will not be held responsible for its accuracy and/or content.
Using the Federal Electronic Level is practical to:
1. Check flatness, roll or pitch of machine ways, machine beds and other surfaces which establish critical paths.
2. Profile surface plates or other precision surfaces.
3. Align missile, gyro and radar platforms, machine beds and optical devices and critical sight paths.
4. Check proper installation of building or bridge foundations and structural members.
5. Show deflections in machine tools caused by movement of carriages and cross slides or by the force of the tool against the work.
6. Show the extent of deformation in objects under stress.
The level is useful for the leveling of beds, tables, slides, etc. of machine tools and in erection of other heavy machinery. It can also be used for the precise leveling of instrumentation on missile launching pads, etc.
Some machine tool builders are also planning to build leveling heads permanently into their machine tools, so that distortion of beds and columns due to positioning of slides or spindles may be read and compensated for.
FEATURES:
1. The Electronic Level is completely portable, self-contained, general purpose unit, combining high accuracy with ease of operation.
2. Reliable, solid state circuitry assures high accuracy and stability.
3. Analog models have patented “Click-Scale” dial which provides three magnifications, individually presented (no confusion over multiple sets of numbers on the dial), at the turn of a knob.
4. Built-in stand for easier viewing of the meter.
5. Correlated scales – once zero is set on the highest magnification, it is maintained as you switch to other magnifications.
6. Long range electrical zero adjustment eliminates the necessity of any mechanical zeroing feature.
7. Fast reading (as compared to spirit level). It requires less than 1 second for the pointer to come to rest.
8. The design allows for different mountings and other magnifications.
