Description
FOR SALE: Compact network attached storage device (OpenMediaVault on Dell Optiplex 390 SFF hardware).
The device is a small form factor PC (sized approximately 12 x 11 x 4 in) converted into a network attached storage device running OpenMediaValut. Out of the box, the device is configured as a file dump. Connect it to your local network, and you have a shared 250 GB network drive readable and writable by any authorized user of the network. Instantly, no configuration required. If this is not your preferred mode of operation, OpenMediaVault is a sophisticated NAS management system that allows you to configure multiple users, each with their own access permissions. The buyer will receive detailed configuration notes for the device.
The device can be configured to back up the data it holds to an external USB device, OneDrive, or Amazon S3. Under the hood, it is a Debian Linux system that can operate rsync, rclone, and many other storage management tools available for Linux. The device is expandable; it has eight USB ports that can be used to connect external storage devices. This allows sharing those devices over the network. Keep in mind, however, that those are USB 2 ports.
The device runs on an Intel Core i3-2120 processor (3.3 GHz) with 4 GB of RAM. The operating system is installed on an 80 GB Intel SSD, the data is stored on a separate 250 GB Seagate hard drive (3.5 inch, desktop size). Network connectivity is via a Gigabit Ethernet port (Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 network interface card). The unit is actively cooled, so you should expect some gentle fan noise.
The device is explicitly designed for upgradability. Opening the case and removal of drives are completely toolless. This means, among other things, a potential for installing a larger 3.5-inch hard drive, including multi-terabyte models. Since the OS is installed on a dedicated SSD, the data drive can be upgraded or replaced without reinstalling the OS. In our estimation, this device is a good choice for a home or a micro business with modest data storage needs (documents, photos, backups from a few computers, etc.).
The device is in very good physical condition (please review the photos). A power cable (

) is included.
