horseshoe
is a wonderful
I.O.O.F.
artifact. Most of the metallic copper enamel paint used to cover the cast iron piece is still intact, with only some minor paint loss noticed at some of the high spots of this graphically exciting piece. The
International Order of Odd Fellows
is spelled out in its acronym
'I.O.O.F.'
along the bottom, while
'F.I.T.'
is somewhat obscured and hidden in a framed band in the middle of the inside of the horseshoe. An eagle with spread wings sits perched atop the horseshoe frame of the
Odd Fellow
emblem, while an omniscient, omnipresent, watchful, 'all-seeing' eye gazes out from the top of the stacked graphic iconography. This is what makes early
Odd Fellow
fraternal order artifacts so interesting, in that they're loaded with imagery and symbolism, often incongruently placed together or on top of each other, as is the case with this
