48" Lightweight Cast Iron Camelback Machinist's Straight Edge Featherweight design.  These castings weigh about 41 pounds 4 ounces as cast and can be machined to between 36 pounds and 32 pounds depending on purchaser's preference.  As cast, the sole has about 1/8" up and down bow in it it simply due to the way the metal solidifies in the mold.  It is more or less straight side-to-side.
Please see the 36" Featherweight  to see the blue-painted straight edge shown in the pictures in that listing.  It is my personal straight edge and does not show the appearance of the raw casting I am selling nor of the machined straight edge.
However it does show how nice a little bit of grinding and some paint can make one of these castings look!  Several of the photos do show the raw casting.

My 48" straight edge is a proven (I have been selling these essentially by word of mouth til now to amateur and professional scrapers) uniquely designed lightweight rigid grey cast iron metrology tool.  It weighs about half that of other 48" straight edges and yet offers better rigidity and more versatility than any other straight edge.  Its broad sole is designed to reach under vee ways and other features though it is not intended to be used as a prism.  Feedback from my customers has been strongly positive.  They can use this light straight edge all day and not be worn out hoisting a "boat anchor" to and from the machine.  This is especially true on vertical ways.
I designed this straight edge and I personally cast each and every one in my own foundry using commercially sourced grey 40 cast iron feedstock.  Each casting is carefully inspected and hardness tested on calibrated industrial equipment to insure an excellent and uniform void-free scraping surface.  Every casting is properly thermally stress relieved prior to shipment.  The quality of these castings is second to none.  I guarantee it.
I have carefully tested the stiffness of my design and found that it deflects less than a ten thousandth of an inch when supported at each end and loaded with 30 pounds at it center as shown in one of the photos.
Casting are supplied either as raw castings.  Raw castings have had gates and risers cut off and parting lines coarsely smoothed and any flash knocked off but are otherwise as the come from the mold.  This casting is not sold as a machined casting as it exceeds the capacity of the equipment I have available for machining.
Local pickup is ideal, but if castings have to be shipped they are securely boxed in a fitted wood box.  Ground shipping within the US costs 50 dollars UPS ground.  I usually ship within 1 working day of receiving payment for an order.  I have straight edges currently in stock ready to ship.  I can ship outside the continental US, but pricing may vary.

These casting are not machined nor are they precision scraped.  You can buy one and have it machined and then scrape it.
